CHAPTER 01 / THE BLANK PAGE
01 The Blank Page
You have been here before. Statistically, you have never once remembered it.
Example Domain is not a business. It is a reserved plot. IANA sets aside example.com, example.net, and example.org so that documentation, tests, and screenshots have a safe address that will never resolve to someone’s production server.
The page you are looking at is the artifact. It has no header, no footer, no logo, no tracking, no product. It has a gray page, a white card, a paragraph, and one blue link.

CHAPTER 02 / ANATOMY
02 Anatomy
The card disassembles. Every default is a decision someone made and then stopped noticing.
At 600px max-width and 2em padding, the specimen is a rounded rectangle with a whisper of shadow. The measurements are the content.
- MAX-WIDTH 600px
- MARGIN 5em auto
- PADDING 2em
- RADIUS 0.5em
- SHADOW 0 3px 6px rgba(0,0,0,.02)
- BODY SIZE 1em / 1.5
The card is not designed to be seen. It is designed to be ignored at exactly the right scale.
CHAPTER 03 / THE BLUE LINK
03 The Blue Link
The only door in the building is blue.
Learn more is the sole navigational element. It points outward to IANA. In a page designed to be forgotten, this is the one instruction: leave.
#348 — 1 LINK — EXTERNAL
The link is not a call to action. It is a release valve. The specimen has no interior, so the only path is out.
CHAPTER 04 / THE RESERVE
04 The Reserve
RFC 2606 is the act of setting land aside so nothing will ever be built on it.
“The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three top-level domain names for use in documentation: example.com, example.net, example.org.”
This is not abandonment. It is preservation by agreement. The page is empty because it is protected from being filled.
In a web that monetizes attention, Example Domain is a rare legal instrument: a place that exists only to be used as an example, and never as an operation.
CHAPTER 05 / THE TRIPLETS
05 The Triplets
Three addresses, one specimen. Overlay them and the difference cancels to black.
example.com, example.org, and example.net are deliberately identical in function and nearly identical in form. Differentiation would defeat the purpose.
- .COM commercial placeholder
- .ORG organizational placeholder
- .NET network placeholder
They are interchangeable by design. The only meaningful difference is which one you happened to type.
CHAPTER 06 / THE EVERYWHERE
06 The Everywhere
It has been in every tutorial you skipped and every test suite you ran.
Example Domain is the background actor of the web: the URL in the README, the fixture in the integration test, the screenshot in the slide deck, the placeholder in the API doc. Billions of appearances. Almost no memories.
CHAPTER 07 / THE RETURN
07 The Return
You leave. Nothing changed. The card is still there, still 600px wide.
No annotation. No magnification. No orange. The specimen returns to what it always was: a gray page, a white card, a paragraph, and one blue link.
Example Domain
This domain is for use in documentation examples without needing permission. Avoid use in operations.
